for Couples: What to Do and Where to Stay

If you're planning a trip to Tenerife as a couple, the most important question isn't "which hotel is the most romantic?", but rather which area is best for the type of trip you have in mind.

This is a fundamental distinction.

A couple who wants the beach, restaurants, and evening strolls has completely different needs than someone who wants to wake up every morning and set off to explore the island.

And a couple who want to relax by the ocean probably shouldn't choose the same area as two thirty-somethings who want to combine the sea with nightlife.

Tenerife offers all these possibilities, but not in the same place.

Your choice of base affects the weather, travel times, evening atmosphere, and even how much you'll actually use your car.

Why choosing the right area is essential

One of the most notable characteristics of Tenerife is the climatic difference between the north and the south.

The official portal Tenerife Tourism describes the south as drier and sunnier, with less rainfall and more hours of sunshine, while the north is generally cooler, greener, and subject to more rainfall.

This doesn't mean that the north has bad weather or that it never rains in the south.

This means that, especially in the winter months, a couple who prioritizes sea and sun should carefully consider the south.

If you prefer hiking, historic villages, greenery, and a less resort-like atmosphere, the north can be much more interesting.

If Tenerife is also your first experience in the archipelago, our comparison on Which island to choose for the first time in the Canary Islands?.

Where to stay in Tenerife as a couple

There is no absolute best area.

This is the choice I would make based on the profile:

If you are looking above all…

Area to be class="wp-block-heading">Costa Adeje and La Caleta: for couples seeking comfort

If you want an easy-to-organize stay, southwest Tenerife is probably the most straightforward choice.

Costa Adeje is home to a concentration of mid- to high-end hotels, beaches, restaurants, marine activities, spas, and services. The official tourism portal describes it as one of the main tourist areas in the south of the island, with high-end hotel infrastructure, well-maintained beaches, and a wide range of dining and shopping options.

I would choose it for: first holiday in Tenerife, couples looking for sea and comfort, stays without too much travel, those who want to combine beach and excursions, those who prefer 4 or 5 star hotels.

I would avoid it if: you're looking for small towns, absolute silence, or a less touristy experience.

And La Caleta?

La Caleta is one of the areas I would most readily recommend to a couple who want to stay in the south but are looking for a quieter environment than the central areas of Costa Adeje.

The small coastal village has a seaside promenade and several restaurants. The La Puntilla bathing area overlooks the village, and the coastline extends towards a protected natural area.

The advantage here isn't having dozens of things to do right next to the hotel. It's quite the opposite.

You can spend the day touring Tenerife and return in the evening to a more relaxed area, take a walk by the sea and have dinner without having to get back in the car.

Suitable for: Couples seeking tranquility, good food, and well-maintained facilities.

For those who are less suitable: those who want to save as much as possible or have a lively nightlife just steps from their room.

Los Gigantes and Puerto Santiago: for views and tranquility

This area is often overlooked when planning a trip to Tenerife as a couple.

The Acantilados de Los Gigantes are among the most impressive coastal walls on the island and can be seen both from the lookouts and during boat trips.

The surrounding tourist area is officially described as quiet and suitable for sun and sea.

The Mirador de Archipenque is also one of the easiest points to reach to observe the cliffs and the sunset towards La Gomera.

I would choose it for: couples who want a less hectic area, sunsets, sea excursions, whale watching, a slower-paced holiday.

I would avoid it if: you want large shopping areas, nightclubs, or to change restaurants and clubs every night without using the car.

It's an area that works very well when you want to alternate a few days of exploration with days where practically nothing happens. And as a couple, sometimes it's exactly the right plan.

Puerto de la Cruz: for a couple who wants to experience the north

If you're looking for more than just sun and resorts, Puerto de la Cruz is a completely different experience.

The historic center is protected and includes Plaza del Charco, the old port, La Ranilla, and numerous historic buildings. The city also features a long walkable waterfront, restaurants, shops, and gardens.

It is an interesting base for those who want to explore the north, La Orotava and other inland areas.

I'd choose it for: couples who love walking, restaurants, and city life without the hustle and bustle, nature and villages, more active stays, and those who prefer the green north to the touristy south.

I would avoid it if: your main goal is to spend seven sunny days at the beach during the winter.

The north is greener also because the climate is different from the south. If your top priority is sunbathing and the sea, I wouldn't choose Puerto de la Cruz just because you found a cheaper hotel.

El Médano: for sporty and casual couples

El Médano is very different from both Costa Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz.

It has a wide beach and a promenade with restaurants, bars, and shops, mostly dedicated to water sports. The part furthest from the center is particularly popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

It's an area I'd recommend to a couple who aren't looking for a resort, but a place where they can leave their apartment or hotel, walk to the beach, have a drink on the promenade, and enjoy the day with little formality.

Suitable for: young couples, sports enthusiasts, surfers, windsurfers and those who love informal environments.

It is less suitable for: those who want a constantly sheltered sea, luxury facilities or a holiday built around spas and resorts.

And Playa de las Américas?

I wouldn't rule it out a priori.

However, I would only choose it if nightlife is really a priority.

In the south of Tenerife, Playa de las Américas is home to bars, restaurants, clubs and discos near the coast.

For a young couple looking to go out at night, it might make sense. For a couple who says, "We want to relax," it doesn't: there are much more suitable areas.

What to do in Tenerife as a couple

1. See the sunset on Teide and stop for the stars

It's one of the programs I would recommend even to those who don't normally like organized excursions.

Teide National Park changes dramatically between day and night. Tenerife is considered a prime destination for astronomical observation thanks to its altitude, air quality, and sky clarity, which is why the area is also home to a major observatory.

In the park, you can observe the sky independently in designated areas or participate in organized astronomical activities; specific permits may be required in some protected areas.

A very practical tip: bring warm clothing. Just because you're wearing a swimsuit a few hours earlier on the coast doesn't mean it'll be warm at altitude. The official tourism portal reports that winter nighttime temperatures in high altitudes can drop below freezing.

2. Go up with the Teide Cable Car

If you want to add the cable car to your day, a return daytime ticket for a non-resident adult in 2026 will cost around €42 per person (prices may vary depending on date and availability, so always check before booking).

The ticket doesn't include a permit to reach the crater. This is important because many confuse "going up by cable car" with "reaching the summit of Teide." They're not the same thing.

Accessing Pico del Teide via the Telesforo Bravo trail requires a specific permit, managed through Tenerife ON, and from 2026 also involves a cost (an ecotax) that varies depending on the day and type of visit: check this in advance, because it can affect the excursion budget more than you might expect.

If your goal is simply to experience the volcanic landscape, ride the cable car, and enjoy the viewpoints, reaching the highest point is not mandatory.

3. Go on a whale watching trip

It's one of the most sensible activities to do in the Southwest.

Excursions depart from Los Gigantes, Puerto Colón, and Los Cristianos, among other areas. Various cetacean species are observed in the area throughout the year.

There's an important rule here, though: choose a licensed vessel. The regulations require, among other things, a minimum distance of 60 meters from the animals and a maximum observation time of 30 minutes in the vicinity of the group.

For a couple, I would choose a smaller, quieter boat if the goal is to enjoy the sea, rather than evaluating the excursion solely based on the lowest price.

4. Spend an afternoon between Los Gigantes and the sunset

You can combine a boat trip with a walk in Puerto Santiago and finish at the Mirador de Archipenque.

It's a simple program, doesn't require a full day, and allows you to avoid the classic vacation where you have to "see something" every day.

From Archipenque the sun sets towards the ocean and, on clear days, the view reaches as far as La Gomera.

5. Spend a day in the north

If you sleep in the south, I would still include at least one day in the north.

Puerto de la Cruz can be combined with La Orotava or with a visit to the Botanical Garden. The La Orotava Climate Garden, despite its name, is located in Puerto de la Cruz and was established in the late 18th century. Admission is affordable, but check the latest opening hours and prices before your visit.

It's not an activity that alone justifies a trip to the other side of the island. But it works very well within a day dedicated to the north.

6. Choose a beach different from the usual resort

As a couple, I would avoid spending seven days in the same hotel.

Tenerife offers a wide variety of beaches: light sand, volcanic sand, tourist bays, and wilder stretches of coast.

In our blog we have collected some of these differences in the article dedicated to The 7 most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands, where Tenerife is also represented by Playa de Las Teresitas.

The goal shouldn't be to visit them all. Choose two or three that really make sense for the area where you're staying.

Do you need a car for a couples holiday in Tenerife?

It depends a lot on the program.

If you're staying in Costa Adeje, La Caleta, or Playa de las Américas and want to spend most of your time at the beach, plus organized excursions, you can easily consider leaving your car alone for the whole week.

If you want to explore the north, Teide, Los Gigantes and small villages at your own pace, a car becomes much more useful.

We've explored this very choice in our guide, "Is it worth renting a car in the Canary Islands? Pros and Cons?".

For a couple, the best solution isn't necessarily "car yes" or "car no," but to rent one only for the days you really need it.

How much do the activities cost?

Let’s avoid giving you an “average romantic budget,” because that wouldn’t make much sense.

A verified benchmark for 2026: the Teide cable car round trip costs around €42 per non-resident adult. If you're also aiming for the summit, factor in the Telesforo Bravo trail eco-tax, introduced in 2026.

For the sunset cable car, the Botanical Garden, whale watching, restaurants, and other experiences, we don't provide a single average price: it varies greatly depending on the operator, the season, and the type of service. It's best to check the actual cost based on your travel dates.

When to book

Teide

If you want to reach the summit, don't wait until you arrive on the island.

The Telesforo Bravo trail requires a permit (and now also a fee), and reservations are handled through Tenerife ON. The cable car's official platform itself recommends organizing access to Pico del Teide well in advance.

For the simple cable car, there are assigned sessions and limited places, with online sales.

Hotels

If you have identified a specific hotel in La Caleta, Costa Adeje, or Los Gigantes, I wouldn't necessarily wait for a last-minute rate.

When the location is important, missing out on that facility to save a small amount can completely change the trip.

Sea excursions

If you have a specific preference for a boat, time, or type of experience, it's best to book early rather than just choosing from what's available.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choose the hotel before the area. It's probably the most common mistake. A beautiful hotel in the wrong place stays in the wrong place.

Sleeping in the north and expecting the same climate as the south. The north is wonderful precisely because it's different: greener, more humid, and climatically less dry than the south. If sun and sea are your priorities, choose your area accordingly.

Choose Playa de las Américas and then complain about the nightlife. It's a place with a wide selection of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. If you're looking for quiet, it's not the first area we'd recommend.

Go half board or all inclusive and then stay out all day. If you've planned Teide, the north, Los Gigantes, whale watching, and other excursions, ask yourself how often you'll actually use the hotel's meals. Sometimes a simple breakfast is much more satisfying.

Organize every single day before departure. Leave at least one day free. In Tenerife, the weather can vary between the north, south, and high altitudes. A flexible day allows you to move between Teide, the sea, or the north depending on the conditions.

Underestimating the new Teide eco-tax. If your plan includes the summit, it is no longer a simple free permit: check the updated cost before leaving, not at the ticket office.

Advice from those who live in the Canary Islands

When a couple asks us for a quote for Tenerife, the first question I would ask is not: “What hotel do you want?”

It's: "How do you imagine your ideal day on vacation?"“

If you answer: “A leisurely breakfast, the beach, a nice restaurant in the evening, and two excursions during the week,” my first choice would probably be Costa Adeje or La Caleta.

Or: “We want to travel a lot, see different towns, nature and restaurants”, I would start considering Puerto de la Cruz or a stay in the south with a car.

Or again: “We don’t want confusion, we want to look at the sea and disconnect”, Los Gigantes immediately comes into the options.

If you're a sporty couple, love surfing and casual bars, and aren't interested in a large resort, El Médano makes much more sense than Costa Adeje.

This is also why I would never choose South Tenerife simply because "there's more sun there." Sunshine matters, but it's not enough. The location must be consistent with what you'll be doing for the next seven days.

Another tip: if you have a week, don't try to see all of Tenerife. It's physically possible to cover many kilometers, but it's not necessarily a great vacation.

It's best to choose three or four important experiences, one or two days at the beach, and leave time to change your plans.

Finally, as a couple, it's worth spending a little more on an experience you'll remember, rather than indiscriminately upgrading the entire trip. It could be Mount Teide at sunset, a small boat to see whales, a unique dinner, or simply a room with a view in an area you really like.

Your trip should be built around you, not around a “10 must-do” list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best area in Tenerife for a couple on their first holiday? Costa Adeje or La Caleta, in the south: these offer a concentration of high-quality hotels, well-kept beaches, and restaurants, with short travel times. They're the easiest choice for those new to the island.

Do you need a rental car for a couples' holiday in Tenerife? It depends on your plans. If you're staying in a tourist area in the south with beaches and organized excursions, you can do without one. If you want to explore the north, Teide, and Los Gigantes at your own pace, a car becomes very useful—even if it's just for a few days.

How much does it cost to go up on the Teide cable car? A return daytime ticket for a non-resident adult has a reference price of around €42 in 2026, but always check the updated fare before booking.

Can you get to the top of Teide? Only with a specific permit for the Telesforo Bravo trail, managed by Tenerife ON, which has also required a fee (eco-tax) since 2026. The cable car ticket alone does not include access to the summit.

Is the north or south of Tenerife better for couples? The south is drier and sunnier, ideal if sea and sand are your priority. The north is greener and rainier, but offers landscapes, culture, and towns like Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava. It depends on the type of vacation you're looking for, not which is "objectively" better.

What do you need to know before booking a whale watching excursion? Always choose a licensed vessel: regulations require a minimum distance of 60 meters from animals and a maximum observation time of 30 minutes, to ensure their safety.

So is Tenerife a good choice for a couple?

Yes, especially because it allows you to plan very different holidays without changing islands.

The point, however, isn't whether Tenerife is "romantic." A location doesn't become suitable for couples just because a hotel puts petals on the bed.

Tenerife is a great destination for couples because you can choose between sea and comfort in the south, tranquility and sunsets in Los Gigantes, a more urban and green atmosphere in Puerto de la Cruz, or sporty and informal in El Médano.

If you are still undecided between Tenerife and a quieter island, our article on Which island to choose for the first time in the Canary Islands?, where we also compare Lanzarote and Tenerife.
