And the opposite is also true.

The question to ask yourself before comparing hotels should therefore be:

“How do I want to spend most of my days?”

Only then does it make sense to choose the structure.

Corralejo: the most complete choice

For a first holiday in Fuerteventura, Corralejo is probably the easiest area to recommend to a very wide audience.

It is located in the north of the island, opposite Lobos. From the port, there are connections to the islet and to Lanzarote, while the town center offers restaurants, shops, bars, accommodations, and nightlife. The official tourist website specifically lists the beach, shopping area, nightlife, public transportation, and port among the amenities available.

Just a few minutes from the center is the Corralejo Natural Park, with its extensive dune system and the Grandes Playas (Big Beaches). The latter stretch for about nine kilometers and include sections more suited to families and others popular for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Choose Corralejo if: it's your first time in Fuerteventura, you want restaurants and something to do in the evening, you want to visit Lobos, you want to combine beach and surfing, you prefer having plenty of amenities close to your accommodation, you want to explore the north of the island in particular.

I would avoid it if: you want a holiday almost exclusively in a large beachfront resort or if the beaches of southern Jandía are your top priority.

Another detail to understand before booking: the center of Corralejo and the Grandes Playas are not the same thing.

In the town, you'll find urban beaches, including Corralejo Viejo, which offers calm waters, services, and accessibility. The large sandy beaches of the natural park are outside the urban center.

So always check on the map where the hotel is actually located in relation to the beach you plan to use.

For those who choose this area especially for water sports, we have already discussed the comparison in the article Canary Islands for sports enthusiasts: Fuerteventura or Tenerife?

El Cotillo: tranquility, sunsets, and surfing

El Cotillo is a very different choice.

It's an ancient fishing town on the northwest coast. Despite its development in tourism and services, it remains smaller than Corralejo. The area is now also strongly linked to water sports, with schools and access to various surfing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding, windsurfing, and wing foiling spots.

To the north of the town are the lagoons and Playa de La Concha, a sheltered bay that reduces the swell, with parking, lifeguard service and restaurants nearby.

Choose El Cotillo if: you want a quieter holiday, you're a couple, you're interested in surfing and water sports, you love sunsets, you prefer apartments and less "resort-like" accommodations, and you want to experience the north of the island above all else.

It's not the first choice if: you want a lively nightlife, large shopping malls, or a fully organized vacation within a resort.

El Cotillo is one of those places I would tend to choose for the atmosphere, not for the number of services available.

If your goal is to go out in the morning, find a beach, surf, come back, watch the sunset, and have dinner without a complicated plan, it works very well. If, however, you want a wide selection of bars and shops every evening, Corralejo is more flexible.

To better understand the character of the northern coast you can also read our article dedicated to Playa El Hierro and surfing in Fuerteventura.

Caleta de Fuste: families and central location

Caleta de Fuste is often chosen by families, and there is a practical reason.

It is located just seven kilometers from Fuerteventura Airport and has a golden sandy beach protected from waves and currents, as well as a marina, shops, restaurants and golf courses.

From a logistical point of view, it is also more central than Corralejo and Morro Jable.

This doesn't mean it's "in the exact middle" of every attraction, but for those who want to explore both parts of the north and south, it avoids having to start from one end of the island each day.

Choose Caleta de Fuste if: you're traveling with children, you want a sheltered beach, you're staying for a short time, you want to be close to the airport, you plan to tour different parts of the island, you want services and restaurants without looking for a vibrant nightlife.

I would choose it less easily if: wild beaches and the most spectacular landscapes are the main element of the trip.

Caleta de Fuste is above all a practical choice. And it's important to say this, because "the most beautiful area" and "the best place to stay" don't always coincide.

For a family with a small child, a late flight, and a week of driving excursions, having a quiet beach, amenities, and a nearby airport can be much more beneficial than staying in a more scenic but less convenient location.

Costa Calma: resort, beach, and water sports

Costa Calma is located in the south of Fuerteventura, near the Jandía peninsula.

The resort has been developed with hotels and apartments of various categories, and the official tourist portal explicitly presents it as a destination dedicated to relaxation, the beach, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

The main beach is wide and connected, at low tide, to other stretches of the southern coast. The northern section includes more family-friendly areas, while the southern section offers more surfing and windsurfing opportunities.

Choose Costa Calma if: you want a resort near the beach, you're looking to relax, you want to windsurf or kitesurf, you're especially interested in the south, you prefer to spend many days between hotels and the sea, and you don't need a real city life.

I wouldn't choose it for: those who want to stroll every evening among lots of different restaurants, shops and clubs or who want to mainly explore Corralejo and the north.

Costa Calma makes sense especially when the beach is the program, not simply one of the many things to do.

If you find a great all-inclusive but know you'll be spending six days out of seven in the car, you're probably paying for services you won't use much.

Morro Jable and Jandía: for those who want the sea above all else

If you said to me, “I want Fuerteventura because I dream of a great beach and want to spend most of the week there,” Morro Jable would immediately come to mind.

It is one of the main tourist centers in the south and still retains part of its old fishing port. It has restaurants, shops, accommodations, and a port, while the extensive southern beaches stretch out in front of the town.

Morro Jable beach is wide and suitable for both relaxation and beginners' surfing experiences; the coastline extends towards the other beaches of the Jandía Peninsula.

Choose Morro Jable if: sea and beach are your priority, you want the south of the island, you want restaurants and services without giving up the beach, you're staying at least a week, you want to visit the Jandía Peninsula, you prefer a real center rather than an exclusively resort area.

I would avoid it if: you want to spend continuous days in Corralejo, El Cotillo and Lobos.

The problem isn't Morro Jable. It's simply geography. Staying in the far south and then wanting to experience the north almost every day is a misuse of your hotel's location.

Esquinzo and Butihondo: When to Choose a Resort Outside the Center

Between Costa Calma and Morro Jable you will find several accommodations in the Esquinzo and Butihondo areas.

Here the reasoning changes again.

Esquinzo-Butihondo Beach is large and offers services, parking, restaurants, and a bus connection to Morro Jable. The area is home to a wide range of hotels and apartments.

It's a very sensible choice if you want: a resort, sea, tranquility, half board or all inclusive, and few needs for evening life outside the structure.

It's less suitable if you want to leave the hotel and immediately find yourself in the center of a town with plenty of options.

An important rule of thumb applies here: before booking a resort, ask yourself how many nights you really want to spend away from home. If the answer is "hardly any," the area may be perfect. If you imagine walking, different restaurants, and bars every night, Morro Jable is generally more suitable.

Which area should I choose based on my type of trip?

Here is the summary I would use when we need to orient a client.

Type of holiday

Area to evaluate first

First time in Fuerteventura

Corralejo

Young couple

Corralejo / El Cotillo

Family with children

Caleta de Fuste

Surf

Corralejo / El Cotillo

Kitesurfing and windsurfing

Costa Calma / Sotavento

Absolute relaxation

Costa Calma / Esquinzo

Long beaches

Morro Jable / Jandía

Resorts and all-inclusive

Costa Calma / Esquinzo / Jandía

Nightlife and restaurants

Corralejo

Sunsets and a peaceful atmosphere

El Cotillo

Short stay

Caleta de Fuste

Visiting North and South

Caleta de Fuste, by car

Almost all of my vacation was at the seaside.

Morro Jable / Costa Calma

This table doesn't mean a child can't have a great time in Corralejo or that a couple can't choose Costa Calma. It's meant to help you identify the area that requires the least compromise for the type of trip you have in mind.

Do you need a car in Fuerteventura?

Not always, but often it makes a big difference.

Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma, and Morro Jable have public transportation and tourist services.

However, if you want to discover different beaches, travel between north and south, or visit less urbanized areas, a car makes travel much more flexible.

The choice depends mainly on the program:

A week at a resort in Costa Calma: a car might be unnecessary for seven days.

A week in Corralejo with the intention of touring all of Fuerteventura: I would seriously consider it.

Caleta de Fuste: with two or three days of exploration, you might only need to rent it for part of your stay.

We have dedicated a specific blog post to this decision: Is it worth renting a car in the Canary Islands? It's also important to avoid having the right hotel in the wrong area remain available.

Common mistakes to avoid

Book based on price without looking at the map. This is the main mistake. A great rate in Morro Jable isn't a bargain if you'd mentally planned your holiday around Corralejo and El Cotillo.

Confuse Corralejo town with the Grandes Playas. You can stay downtown and have restaurants and walking distance, or choose accommodations closer to the dunes. They're different experiences.

Choose El Cotillo expecting the nightlife of Corralejo. El Cotillo works precisely because it's quieter. If you want action, start with a more consistent area.

Book all inclusive and then travel every day. You're paying for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks, and services you risk not using.

Thinking that “Fuerteventura is small, so it's fine to sleep anywhere.”. The distances on the map don't tell you how much time you'll spend commuting each day. It's best to sleep close to what you'll be doing most often.

Choose the south if surfing in the north is your priority. For those who want to build their trip around surfing, Corralejo and El Cotillo are much more logical bases. Our comparison for sports enthusiasts explores this difference in depth: Canary Islands for sports enthusiasts: Fuerteventura or Tenerife?

Advice from those who live in the Canary Islands

When we are asked “what is the best area of Fuerteventura?”, the most useful answer is not Corralejo, Costa Calma or Morro Jable.

It's another question: “What do you want to do as soon as you leave the hotel?”

If the answer is “Walking, finding restaurants, having a drink in the evening and having various options”, I would look at Corralejo first.

If it's "I want to unwind, watch the sunset, and I'm not interested in the nightlife," I'd consider El Cotillo.

If you're traveling with children, want a simple beach, and don't want to start your vacation with a long transfer after your flight, Caleta de Fuste deserves a special mention: it's located seven kilometers from the airport and the bay is protected from waves and currents.

If you say, “I booked Fuerteventura because I want to get up, have breakfast, and go to a huge beach,” I would go to Morro Jable, Jandía, or Costa Calma.

If the reason for the trip is surfing, wind, and ocean, I would think about the spots first and only then about the hotel.

This is something we see often: you choose a property because it looks good in the photos, and then you try to tailor your vacation to its location. You need to do exactly the opposite. First, plan your trip. Then, choose the area. And only at the end do you compare hotels.

Another thing I'd do is avoid changing accommodations during a typical week's vacation just to "see both north and south." For most seven-night stays, I'd prefer to choose a base carefully and use the car for the exploration days. Changing accommodations means checking out, packing, checking in again, and missing half a day.

For longer stays, however, splitting the trip between the north and south can be beneficial. For example, Corralejo + Morro Jable allows you to experience two very different Fuerteventuras without turning every day into a transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best area for a first holiday in Fuerteventura? Corralejo, in most cases, is a hub of services, restaurants, nightlife, and the opportunity to combine beach and water sports, as well as being the starting point for visiting Lobos.

Do you need a car to visit Fuerteventura? It depends on your plans. If you want to explore more beaches, the north and south of the island, a car makes your trip much more flexible.

Where is the best place to stay with children in Fuerteventura? Caleta de Fuste is generally the most practical choice: a beach sheltered from waves and currents, nearby services, and only seven kilometers from the airport.

What's the best surfing spot in Fuerteventura? Corralejo and El Cotillo, in the north of the island, remain the most consistent bases for those building their trip around surfing.

Is it worth splitting your stay between the north and south of the island? For a week, generally not: it's better to choose a base carefully and use the car for the days of exploration. For longer stays, splitting the trip between two areas (for example, Corralejo and Morro Jable) might make sense.

How far is Caleta de Fuste from the airport? Approximately seven kilometers, reachable in a few minutes by car, taxi, or bus—one of the reasons why it's a practical choice for short stays or with small children.

So, where is the best place to stay in Fuerteventura?

No area is "the best" in absolute terms. But there may be a significantly better area for your trip.

And this is where it pays to decide carefully before booking: changing hotels is easy, changing the location of the hotel once you're already on the island is much less so.

Want to know which area is best for your trip?

If you provide us with your dates, departure airport, number of people, and the type of vacation you'd like, we can first recommend the most suitable area and then create a personalized quote for you, including flight, accommodation, car rental (if applicable), and truly useful experiences. Write to us on WhatsApp: without filling the package with services you wouldn't use.

In short: where to sleep in Fuerteventura

First time, services, nightlife, surfing → Corralejo

Couples, tranquility, sunsets → El Cotillo

Families, short stays, close to the airport → Caleta de Fuste

Resort, relaxation, windsurfing/kitesurfing → Costa Calma

Great beaches, seaside holiday → Morro Jable / Jandía

Quiet resort outside the center → Esquinzo / Butihondo

If you're still unsure which area to choose, that's exactly the kind of question we answer in just a few minutes on WhatsApp.

Corralejo is the best choice for a first holiday and for those looking for services and nightlife; El Cotillo for tranquility and surfing; Caleta de Fuste for families and a central location; Costa Calma for resorts and wind sports; Morro Jable for those who prioritize long beaches and sea.

[96
129,167
post-121884","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog-canarie","tag-isola-fuerteventura","tag-tema-consigli-vacanze

In quale zona dormire a Fuerteventura in base al tipo di viaggio

<meta name="description" content="Dove dormire a Fuerteventura?
