When and on which islands?

One of the phrases we hear most often is: “It never rains in the Canary Islands.”

It is not true.

The climate of the archipelago It is particularly favorable, but the Canary Islands are not a territory without rainfall.

Another interesting thing is that the rainfall is extremely unevenly distributed. It can vary from island to island, but especially between two areas of the same island.

Tenerife is the easiest example to understand. The AEMET climate norms for 1981-2010 record 80 mm of average precipitation in January at Tenerife North Airport, located at 632 meters above sea level, while Tenerife South Airport records 17 mm in the same month. In February, the comparison is 70 mm versus 20 mm; in March, 61 mm versus 15 mm.

These numbers shouldn't be interpreted as representing every beach or location on either side of the island: the stations are also located at very different altitudes. However, they serve to demonstrate how misleading it is to refer generically to "Tenerife weather.".

The same principle applies, with varying degrees, in the rest of the archipelago.

Why it can rain in the north and be sunny in the south

To understand the weather in the Canary Islands, you need to know at least three elements: trade winds, relief, and microclimates.

The highest islands intercept the moist air masses carried by the trade winds. When the air encounters the mountains, it is forced to rise, cooling and potentially forming clouds over exposed areas.

The practical result is something anyone who lives in Tenerife or Gran Canaria sees all the time: you can start out in a cloudy area and soon find yourself under the sun. And it's also why some parts of the islands are much greener than others.

This contrast is particularly striking on the mountainous islands. Tenerife reaches altitudes above 3,700 meters with Mount Teide; Gran Canaria exceeds 1,900 meters in its highest areas. It's no surprise, then, that topography plays a huge role in cloud and precipitation distribution.

For the traveler, the consequence is simple: looking at the weather icon for the entire island is much less useful than you might think. If the app shows a cloud with rain over Tenerife, it doesn't automatically mean it will rain all day in Costa Adeje.

When does it rain the most in the Canary Islands?

Climatically, precipitation is generally more likely during autumn and winter, while summer is much drier.

AEMET data clearly show this even in the already arid eastern islands.

At Fuerteventura Airport, normal precipitation is 14 mm in January, 16 in February and 12 in March, but drops to 5 mm in April and just 1 mm in May.

At Lanzarote Airport we find 16 mm in January, 18 in February, 12 in March, 5 in April and 2 in May.

The difference becomes evident when comparing them with La Palma Airport: 49 mm in January, 57 in February and 33 in March.

This doesn't mean a winter week on La Palma has to be rainy, or that a weather system can't reach Fuerteventura. We're talking about climatology, which is statistically normal over long periods, not the weather forecast for the week you're going on vacation.

And October, November and December?

These are months when Atlantic disturbances can affect the archipelago and the risk of precipitation increases compared to summer.

For reference, the AEMET 1981-2010 normals indicate for December around 26 mm at Fuerteventura Airport, 29 mm at Lanzarote Airport and over 30 mm at Gran Canaria Airport.

But "30 mm per month" doesn't mean it rains a little every day. Rainfall in the Canary Islands can be very concentrated: several dry days can be interrupted by a more intense episode. This is precisely why a monthly average should be interpreted with caution.

Tenerife: North and South may seem like two different islands

If your question is “Does it rain in Tenerife?”, the correct answer should always begin with: “Where?”

South Tenerife

Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and much of the southwest are normally chosen in winter due to their greater climatic stability compared to the north.

Data from Tenerife South Airport show very low average precipitation values: 17 mm in January, 20 in February, 15 in March, 7 in April and just 1 mm in May in the 1981-2010 climate period.

This isn't a guarantee of sunshine. No climate data can promise that. However, it does mean that if you're booking a winter vacation primarily for the beach and relaxation, the south is statistically a more prudent choice than the north.

North Tenerife

The north is greener precisely because it receives more humidity.

The Tenerife Norte station recorded 80 mm in January, 70 in February, 61 in March and 39 in April.

But be careful not to translate this data as "it always rains in the north." That would be equally incorrect. You can find splendid sunny days in Puerto de la Cruz and clouds in the south. Climate describes trends, not a single day.

The real difference is that in the north the probability of cloud cover and precipitation is greater and the landscape reflects it.

If you are considering a trip in the colder months, you can also find our guide on the blog Which Canary Island is the warmest in winter?.

Gran Canaria: same logic, with strong microclimates

Gran Canaria is another island where simply saying “it’s raining in Gran Canaria today” can be of little use.

The north, the mountainous interior and the south can have very different conditions.

The AEMET station at Gran Canaria Airport, on the east coast, records moderate temperatures in the first months of the year compared to the 1981-2010 norm, but the southwestern tourist area — Maspalomas, Puerto Rico, Arguineguín, Puerto de Mogán — often benefits from drier conditions than the northern slopes and mountainous areas.

For those who book Gran Canaria in winter mainly for the sun and sea, therefore, the hotel location is at least as important as the month itself.

This is an important concept because we often see two properties compared as if the only difference is price. A hotel in the north and one in Puerto Rico don't necessarily offer the same probability of weather during a winter week.

Fuerteventura: How much does it really rain?

Fuerteventura is one of the islands where rain tends to have the least impact on the normal tourist experience.

AEMET data from the airport station show very low values: 14 mm in January, 16 in February, 12 in March, 5 in April and 1 in May.

So Fuerteventura is a good choice if your priority is reducing climate risk related to rainfall.

But there's another, much more important variable to consider: the wind. A perfectly sunny day can be less pleasant at the beach if you choose a very exposed spot and are particularly sensitive to the wind.

That's why I wouldn't choose Fuerteventura simply because I said, "It doesn't rain there." The correct question is, "When and in what area do I want to stay?"“

In our in-depth analysis on when to go to Fuerteventura We analyzed the relationship between climate, wind, and type of vacation.

Lanzarote: one of the driest choices

Lanzarote has a similar climatic pattern to Fuerteventura in terms of rainfall.

At Lanzarote Airport, AEMET norms indicate 16 mm of rainfall in January, 18 in February, 12 in March, 5 in April and 2 in May.

This also explains the appearance of the landscape: much drier than the western islands.

If your main concern is: “I’m going to the Canary Islands in winter and I don’t want to risk a week of rain”, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are worth considering.

But I would never use the phrase "guaranteed sunshine." The Canary Islands can be affected by weather patterns and even episodes of heavy rainfall. An often-cited example: on December 25, 2022, the Gran Canaria area was hit by severe weather with heavy rain and strong winds—according to some sources, one of the highest daily values recorded by the airport station, which has been operating since 1951. We haven't found direct confirmation of the often-cited exact figure (104 mm), so we report it with this caution: it's an exceptional event, not the norm, and it demonstrates why "it never rains in the Canary Islands" is a promise no one should make.

And La Graciosa?

North of Lanzarote, La Graciosa is part of the Chinijo archipelago and administratively falls under the municipality of Teguise. Its climate is classified as hot desert, consistent with that of Lanzarote: it is a small, flat, and arid island, without a dedicated official weather station that allows for precise comparisons down to the millimeters as on the larger islands. In practice, those who choose Lanzarote for its dry climate can consider a trip to La Graciosa with the same expectations, without any significant differences to consider.

La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro

Here the type of holiday changes.

The Palm

La Palma is much greener and more mountainous than Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The coastal station at the airport already recorded 49 mm in January and 57 in February, values significantly higher than those on the two eastern islands.

If you choose La Palma, you usually do so for its nature, forests, trekking, volcanic landscapes, and environmental variety. So I wouldn't rule it out because "it rains more." I simply wouldn't recommend it as a first choice to someone who says, "My only priority is spending seven days on the beach in January."“

La Gomera

La Gomera is also strongly influenced by relief and trade winds.

The vegetation of Garajonay National Park and the presence of laurisilva are linked precisely to humidity conditions that you don't find in the same way on the eastern islands. Here, clouds aren't necessarily a problem: they're part of the landscape you've come to see.

El Hierro

El Hierro also presents significant differences between slopes and altitudes.

For a primarily nature-focused holiday, the weather forecast should be read locally and day by day, especially if trekking or high-altitude activities are planned.

The common concept across the three western islands is simple: greener conditions often mean greater exposure to humidity and precipitation.

Which island should you choose if you want to reduce the risk of rain?

If we had to guide a client who puts the sun before everything else, we would reason like this:

Priority

Area/island to be evaluated

Minimal concern about rain

Lanzarote / Fuerteventura / La Graciosa

Sun + sea in winter

Gran Canaria South / Tenerife South

Sea + many activities

South Tenerife

Dry climate + volcanic landscapes

Lanzarote

Beaches + arid climate

Fuerteventura

Green nature and trekking

La Palma / La Gomera

Peaceful nature trip

El Hierro

This isn't an absolute weather ranking. It's a tourist choice based on how the weather can impact your vacation.

If you want to delve deeper into the period as a whole, you can also find our guide on best time to go to the Canary Islands.

What to do if you find a rainy day

The first thing I'd do isn't cancel the program. I'd check where it's raining.

In Tenerife and Gran Canaria, it can make perfect sense to move to another side of the island, if road conditions and weather allow.

If, however, there's a real storm, I'd avoid the opposite mistake: driving for hours chasing a ray of sunshine. In that case, it's better to use the day for indoor activities, restaurants, historic centers, museums, or simply slowing down.

Furthermore, during heavy rains, I wouldn't improvise trekking in ravines or on mountain trails. It's important to follow any warnings and instructions from local authorities, not the plan written weeks in advance.

How much does it cost to “choose the area with the best climate”?

There's no quantifiable climate cost. And it would be incorrect to argue that a facility in the south always costs more than one in the north: prices and availability depend on the period, category, demand, and treatment.

The financial advice, however, is concrete: don't save 100 euros on your entire stay by choosing a climate zone less suitable for what you want to do.

If your only goal in January is beach and sun, a cheaper hotel in a wetter area might be a false economy. If, on the other hand, you're after trekking and nature, paying more to stay in the touristy south and then driving north every morning might be equally unwise.

First comes the type of vacation. Then the area. Finally, the hotel price.

When to book and common mistakes

Looking at the weather forecast 15 days in advance and panicking. Long-range forecasts aren't as reliable as short-term ones. When planning your suitcase and daily activities, the most useful check is done close to departure.

Interpret the rain icon as “it will rain all day.”. A forecast with a chance of precipitation doesn't automatically mean a completely rainy day. Check the times, probability, expected accumulations, and, above all, the exact location.

Search for “Tenerife weather” or “Gran Canaria weather”. It's too general. Search for Costa Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz, Maspalomas, Puerto Rico, or the exact location where you'll be staying.

Believe in the promise that “it doesn’t rain in the Canary Islands.”. It's marketing, not meteorology. Even the driest areas can receive rain.

Choose the island based only on rainfall. Fuerteventura may be drier than La Palma, but if you're looking for forests and trekking, it's not a comparable option. The weather should help you choose suitable destinations for your trip, not replace all other variables.

Advice from those who live in the Canary Islands

When a customer tells us, “I saw that it’s forecasting rain in the Canary Islands next week,” the first thing we ask is, “Which island and in which area?”

Because everything changes.

In Tenerife, it can be a gray morning in La Laguna, while in Los Cristianos you can enjoy the beach. In Gran Canaria, you can find the classic cloud cover towards Las Palmas and completely different conditions as you head down towards Maspalomas or Puerto Rico.

This is probably the most important thing to understand before booking. In the Canary Islands, you don't just have to choose the island: you have to choose the microclimate.

If you're traveling in January and are primarily looking for the beach, I'd tend to favor Gran Canaria South or Tenerife South if you're also looking for plenty of amenities and activities; I'd consider Lanzarote and Fuerteventura if you prefer a generally drier climate and the type of travel those islands offer.

If, on the other hand, you tell me you love hiking in nature, I wouldn't try to "protect" you from the rain by sending you to Fuerteventura. I'd recommend La Palma, La Gomera, or the north of the main islands, simply explaining that clouds and some precipitation are part of their climate and, to some extent, also the reason those landscapes are so green.

Another practical tip: don't build a seven-day vacation with seven rigid plans. Especially between November and March, I'd keep at least one or two days interchangeable. If the day you plan to visit Teide is overcast or windy, you can move it, or if the north is cloudy, you can focus on the south. And if a serious weather front arrives, you can completely change your plans. It's much smarter than trying to predict the exact weather months in advance.

And above all: don't confuse cloudy weather with bad weather. In the Canary Islands, a morning cloud cover can break, a cloud can get stuck on the mountains while the coast is in the sun, and a day without a perfectly blue sky can still have pleasant temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true that it never rains in the Canary Islands? No, it's a cliché. It rains less than in many other European destinations, especially in the southern tourist areas, but no island is completely free of precipitation, especially in autumn and winter.

Which Canary Island has the least rainfall? Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are statistically the driest of the entire archipelago, with very low average monthly rainfall even in the wettest months.

Should you choose southern Tenerife or Gran Canaria to avoid the rain? Yes, generally: the southern areas of both islands experience much lower average rainfall than the north, thanks to the natural protection offered by the inland relief.

Why does it rain in the north of Tenerife and be sunny in the south on the same day? Because of the trade winds: when they encounter the island's reliefs they are forced to rise, they cool down and form clouds on the exposed side, while the other side often remains clear.

Is it worth giving up La Palma or La Gomera if it rains more? No: those who choose these islands do so precisely for the lush, green nature, which thrives thanks to that same humidity. The weather should be considered in relation to the type of vacation you're looking for, not used as the sole criterion.

What time of year is most likely to rain in the Canary Islands? Autumn and winter are when Atlantic disturbances most frequently affect the archipelago. Summer, however, remains statistically the driest season on all the islands.

Do you want to plan your trip with the right climate in mind?

Island and area matter more than the month you leave. Write to us on WhatsApp Please specify the period, departure airport, type of holiday, and how important sun and sea are to you. We'll recommend not only the island, but also the area best suited to your needs, and prepare a personalized quote without basing your choice on impossible weather forecasts.

In short: does it rain in the Canary Islands or not?

Drier islands: Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Graciosa

Islands with a strong north-south difference: Tenerife and Gran Canaria (drier south, greener and rainier north)

Greener and rainier islands: La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro

Period with highest probability of rain: autumn and winter

Rule of thumb: Choose the type of holiday first, then the area, and check the local weather near your departure — not 15 days before

If you're unsure which island or area to choose based on the climate you're looking for, that's the kind of doubt we can help you resolve in minutes.

Yes, it rains in the Canary Islands, but the amount and frequency vary greatly between islands and even between areas of the same island.
