Because there is no Canary Island more beautiful than this.
This is one of the questions we receive most frequently from those planning their first holiday in the Canary Islands.
Which is better: Tenerife or Gran Canaria? Does Fuerteventura really have the most beautiful sea? Is Lanzarote too dry? Is it worth choosing a lesser-known island?
The problem is that we often look for a universal answer to a question that depends on our expectations.
The Canary Islands are part of the same archipelago, but they offer very different experiences. Some islands feature endless beaches and desert landscapes, others boast mountains, forests, and small villages, and still others where you can alternate a day at the beach with a cultural visit or an inland excursion.
That's why simply choosing the island that looks most beautiful in photographs can lead to a vacation that's different from the one you imagined.
The best choice starts with three questions:
- How much time do you want to spend at the beach versus hiking?
- Do you prefer a tourist location with services or a quiet environment?
- Are you traveling as a couple, with children, with friends, or alone?
From these answers, a destination often emerges that is more suitable than the others.
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura: The Differences
Tenerife: for those who want a complete holiday
Tenerife is the largest island in the archipelago and one of the most versatile destinations for a first holiday.
Its main feature is its variety. In the south, you'll find tourist resorts like Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, and Playa de las Américas, with beaches, hotels, restaurants, and numerous activities.
Moving inland, the landscape changes completely. Teide National Park offers high-altitude volcanic environments, while the Anaga Massif, in the northeast, features mountains, trails, and vegetation very different from that of the southern coastal areas.
In Tenerife you can therefore alternate days at the beach, excursions, visits to historic towns and ocean activities.
We especially recommend it to:
- Those visiting the Canary Islands for the first time.
- Families who want different services and activities.
- Couples who want to combine relaxation and discovery.
- Groups of friends also interested in nightlife.
The limit to know: Some areas in the south are very touristy, while the north has different climates and doesn't offer the same beach experience. If you're looking for miles of natural beaches, other islands might be more suitable.
Gran Canaria: for those seeking sea, cities, and variety
Gran Canaria is particularly interesting for those who want to combine a beach holiday with urban experiences and mountain landscapes.
In the south are Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Meloneras, Amadores, and Puerto de Mogán. These towns have different characteristics: some livelier, others quieter, and still others geared toward resort stays.
One of the island's most recognizable environments is the Maspalomas dunes, a natural sand system located next to the ocean.
To the north, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria offers a different experience, with historic neighborhoods, restaurants, culture, and the urban beach of Las Canteras. Further inland, you'll find villages, valleys, hiking trails, and mountain landscapes.
We especially recommend it to:
- Couples who want the sea and restaurants.
- Families interested in equipped beaches.
- Travelers who want to combine city and nature.
- Those looking for a holiday with a good balance between relaxation and sightseeing.
The limit to know: The north and south can have very different weather conditions. Choosing accommodation without considering the area can significantly alter your experience.

Fuerteventura: for those who put the sea first
Fuerteventura is often the first island we recommend to those who tell us: “Above all, we want beautiful beaches, clear water, and tranquility.”
Its strong points are its wide beaches, open spaces, and predominantly arid landscapes. Among the best-known areas are Corralejo, El Cotillo, Costa Calma, Sotavento, and the Jandía peninsula.
The beaches vary greatly: some are sheltered, others exposed to the wind and waves. Fuerteventura is also a major destination for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.
We especially recommend it to:
- Those who love spending many hours on the beach.
- Couples seeking relaxation and open spaces.
- Surfing and water sports enthusiasts.
- Travelers who don't need many urban attractions.
The limit to know: Wind is an important factor, especially in certain areas and times of year. Furthermore, some of the most photographed beaches aren't necessarily suitable for swimming in all conditions. If you're traveling with small children or always looking for calm seas, choosing the right location becomes crucial.
Lanzarote: for those who love volcanic landscapes and unique places
Lanzarote has a highly recognizable landscape. Here, the volcanic terrain is an integral part of the travel experience.
Timanfaya National Park, La Geria, Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, and the works of César Manrique make the island particularly interesting for those who love nature, architecture, and culture.
The sea also plays an important role. In the south, Playa Blanca offers access to the Papagayo beaches, while other areas of the island offer different coastal environments, such as Famara.
We especially recommend it to:
- Couples looking for a beach vacation with plenty of sightseeing.
- Photography and landscape enthusiasts.
- Travelers interested in volcanic nature.
- Those who prefer an itinerary full of stops but without big cities.
The limit to know: If you're looking for green mountains, forests, and tropical landscapes, Lanzarote might not meet your expectations. Its beauty lies precisely in its volcanic and arid environment.
Which Canary Island should I choose based on my type of trip?
This is the most important part of the comparison. It's not enough to know what each island has to offer: you need to understand what experience you want.
Which island is best for the sea?
Fuerteventura is our top choice for those who love large, natural beaches above all else. Places like Corralejo, Costa Calma, and Jandía offer a wide variety of options, from wide beaches to areas dedicated to water sports.
But you have to distinguish between the beauty of the beach and the swimming conditions. If you're looking for well-equipped beaches, nearby services, and generally more sheltered bays, southern Tenerife and Gran Canaria may be more practical. If you're looking for a mix of beaches and volcanic landscapes, Lanzarote is worth considering.
Which island is best for families with children?
For a first holiday with children, we often recommend Tenerife south or Gran Canaria south. The reason isn't just the sea: the choice of accommodations, the activities available, the proximity to services, and the possibility of organizing different days also count.
In Tenerife, Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos are areas worth considering. In Gran Canaria, resorts like Maspalomas, Amadores, and Puerto de Mogán can offer interesting options. Playa Blanca, in Lanzarote, is also a good option.
Fuerteventura remains possible, but it's worth choosing your beach and accommodation more carefully, especially if you have small children.

What's the most romantic island for a couple?
It depends on the type of couple.
Lanzarote It is interesting for those who love particular landscapes, small itineraries, sunsets and a more intimate atmosphere.
Tenerife It works well for those who want a high-end hotel, restaurants, excursions and a varied vacation.
Gran Canaria It's a good choice for those looking for resorts, beaches, seaside walks, and nights out in clubs.
Fuerteventura It could be perfect for a couple who above all want tranquility and long days at the beach.
So there is no universally more romantic island: it's how you imagine the trip that counts.
What is the best island for young people?
If the priority is to have clubs, restaurants, beaches and nightlife within walking distance, South Tenerife and South Gran Canaria they are generally the most immediate choices.
Playa de las Américas, in Tenerife, is a top destination for those seeking a lively holiday. In Gran Canaria, Playa del Inglés offers a touristy atmosphere with numerous bars and clubs.
Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, on the other hand, may be more suitable for young people interested in surfing, sports, excursions, and days spent outdoors.
Which island is best for trekking and nature?
Here the choice changes.
Tenerife offers Teide, Anaga, and Teno, each with a very different landscape. La Palma is particularly interesting for those who love hiking, mountains, volcanic landscapes, and astronomical observation. La Gomera stands out for its trails immersed in the lush vegetation of Garajonay National Park. Gran Canaria also boasts a mountainous interior that often surprises those familiar only with its beach resorts.
If trekking is the main reason for your trip, La Palma, La Gomera and Tenerife deserve to be evaluated before the others.
What is the best island for a quiet vacation?
Fuerteventura is a good choice if you combine tranquility with beaches and open spaces. La Gomera is interesting for those seeking small towns, nature, and a slower pace. El Hierro is particularly suitable for those who want to get away from the major tourist centers. La Palma can also offer a peaceful stay, especially if you choose accommodations away from the main population centers.
But be careful: tranquility doesn't necessarily mean comfort. On less touristy islands, you need to plan your travel, connections, and services more carefully.

And the lesser-known islands?
Limiting ourselves to the four main islands would be reductive. The archipelago also includes La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and La Graciosa.
La Palma: for hikers and lovers of green landscapes
La Palma is interesting for those who want to dedicate a large part of their holiday to nature. The Caldera de Taburiente, the volcanic landscapes, the trails and the panoramic points are among its main attractions.
It's a particularly suitable choice for those who prefer walking and exploring the area rather than spending every day on the beach.
La Gomera: for those who want to slow down
La Gomera offers a different experience than the larger islands. Garajonay National Park, its villages, and scenic roads make the trip particularly interesting for those who love nature and tranquility.
It's a destination we especially recommend for those looking for a vacation away from the big tourist resorts. If you're considering La Palma versus La Gomera, we've compared the two islands in this article. La Palma or La Gomera: Which is better for nature and tranquility?, and you can also find a dedicated in-depth analysis in Is La Gomera worth it? Pros and cons of the greenest Canary Island..
El Hierro: for those seeking a less touristy island
El Hierro is suitable for independent travellers who appreciate volcanic landscapes, natural pools, diving and small towns.
It's not the most obvious choice for a first beach holiday in the Canary Islands. However, it could be very interesting for those who already know the archipelago and are looking for a different experience.
La Graciosa: for those who love simplicity and natural beaches
La Graciosa can be reached by sea from Lanzarote. It's an island characterized by small towns, unpaved roads, and natural beaches.
It can be visited in a day, but staying overnight allows for a more leisurely experience. It's particularly interesting for those seeking a simple experience, without extensive tourist infrastructure.

Which island to choose in winter and which in summer?
The climate of the Canary Islands allows for year-round travel, but conditions are not the same on every island and location.
In winter
If your primary goal is to spend days in the sun and at the beach, we generally recommend the southern resorts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The mountainous terrain contributes to significant climatic differences between the two islands.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are also good destinations, but you need to consider the wind and sea conditions.
This doesn't mean that good weather is guaranteed every day in the south of Tenerife or Gran Canaria. It does mean that choosing the right area can increase your chances of finding favorable conditions for your desired vacation.
In summer
During the summer, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote can be particularly attractive for water sports enthusiasts, thanks to the influence of the trade winds. For those who prefer more sheltered beaches, southern Tenerife and Gran Canaria offer several alternatives.
La Palma and La Gomera are ideal for those who want to spend more time exploring nature and trekking, taking into account the temperatures and conditions of the individual routes.
If you are planning your trip between June and September, you can find more detailed information in the guide Canary Islands in summer: which island to choose between heat, wind, and sea?.
The advice is to choose the type of holiday first and then evaluate the period and the area, don't limit yourself to the average temperatures of the island.
How much does a holiday in the Canary Islands cost?
There is no island that is always cheaper than the others.
The cost depends mainly on:
- Italian departure airport and available connections.
- Travel period.
- Advance booking.
- Category and location of the accommodation.
- Need a rental car.
- Planned excursions and activities.
A week in a luxury hotel in Tenerife can cost more than an apartment stay in Lanzarote, but the opposite can also be true if you choose different periods and accommodations.
For this reason, I would avoid rigid rankings such as "Fuerteventura is the cheapest" or "Tenerife always costs less". To truly compare two islands, you need to consider the overall cost of the trip, not just the hotel. A cheaper accommodation, but far from the desired activities, may require higher transportation costs.
How many days do you need?
As a practical guide for a first vacation:
| Island | Recommended duration |
|---|---|
| Tenerife | 7–10 days |
| Gran Canaria | 7–10 days |
| Fuerteventura | 7 days |
| Lanzarote | 5–7 days |
| The Palm | 7–10 days |
| La Gomera | 4–6 days |
| El Hierro | 4–6 days |
| La Graciosa | 1–3 days |
These are approximate durations, not mandatory minimums. Those seeking relaxation can stay longer in the same location, while those seeking more intense itineraries can squeeze several visits into a few days.
When is it best to book?
For Christmas, New Year's, Easter, and the main school holidays, it's a good idea to book early. However, there's no universal rule about how many months you need to book to get the best price: flight and accommodation availability changes constantly.
If you're traveling during high season, the main advantage of booking early is having more choice in areas, times, and accommodations. For a trip that includes multiple islands, it's important to also check internal connections before confirming your accommodations.
The most common mistakes when choosing a Canary Island
Choose based on the photographs only. A beautiful beach doesn't automatically mean a perfect vacation: you need to consider the wind, accessibility, amenities, and location of your accommodation.
Thinking that all islands are similar. Tenerife, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura can offer completely different experiences. Choosing without understanding these differences is one of the most common mistakes.
Underestimating distances. Especially in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura, choosing the wrong area can mean spending a lot of time traveling.
Trying to visit too many islands in one week. Traveling between islands takes time: you have to factor in transfers, check-in, possible waits, and connections. For a first seven-day vacation, it's often better to know an island well than to visit it superficially for three.
Confusing the climate of the island with that of the locality. The north and south of Tenerife can have very different conditions on the same day. The same principle applies to Gran Canaria and, in varying forms, to other islands as well. The location you choose is as important as the island itself.
Advice from those who live in the Canary Islands
After years of experience in the area and in organizing holidays for Italian travellers, there is one thing we consider fundamental: We don't recommend the same island to everyone.
If a family with two small children asks us for a week at the seaside, our first evaluation concerns the convenience of the location, the beaches, the structure and the services.
If a couple wants to explore unique landscapes, visit small villages and dedicate time to photography, we could instead focus on Lanzarote.
If two friends want to surf, spend long hours on the beach, and have a sporty holiday, Fuerteventura might be the most natural choice.
And if someone tells us they want to walk, be in nature and get away from the more touristy places, we wouldn't rule out La Palma or La Gomera at all.
Our advice for those coming to the Canary Islands for the first time
If you don't have any particular needs and want a holiday with a bit of everything, I would start by evaluating Tenerife and Gran Canaria. They are two islands that allow you to combine very different activities without having to change destination. If you're undecided between the two, we've discussed it in the comparison. Tenerife or Gran Canaria: Which to Choose for Your Holidays?, while for a general overview of the first time you can find the guide Which island to choose for the first time in the Canary Islands?.
If the sea is your primary goal, I'd immediately include Fuerteventura in the comparison. I'd recommend Lanzarote to those who consider the scenery and sightseeing an important part of their vacation.

Don't just choose the island: choose the area
This is probably the most important tip.
Saying "I want to go to Tenerife" isn't enough to choose accommodation. Sleeping in Costa Adeje or Puerto de la Cruz means having two different experiences. The same goes for Gran Canaria, where staying in Las Palmas isn't the same as choosing Maspalomas or Puerto de Mogán. And in Fuerteventura, Corralejo and Esquinzo don't necessarily meet the same needs.
The area determines much of the daily experience: beach, restaurants, transportation, and available activities.
Also consider what you don't want to find
We often ask travelers what they want from their vacation. But it's equally helpful to know what they want to avoid.
Don't like the wind? Don't want to drive every day? Prefer to avoid touristy areas? Want to go out at night without using your car?
These answers can help you quickly rule out some destinations and identify the most suitable one.
